Freight forwarding apprenticeship
Starting your professional journey
Metro’s International Freight Forwarding Specialist apprenticeship is your opportunity to start your career with a successful, technology-enabled, privately-owned business, powering the supply chains of leading British and international brands.
Freight forwarders act on behalf of importers and exporters to plan and organise the safe, efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods globally, using a variety of land, air and sea transport. They prepare documentation, negotiate freight charges, book cargo space and deal with customs controls and procedures.
The Metro apprenticeship programme comprises 18 months learning on-the-job training and 3 months end point assessment and is designed to provide the kind of foundation to a career in global international logistics that will prepare you for a world of work like no other.
Metro’s apprenticeship programme provides people new to the industry with the opportunity to work in a busy international freight forwarding environment.
Apprentices undertake a variety of tasks such as shipment bookings, creating appropriate documents, liaising with carriers, and supporting customers. On-the-job training and learning new skills is provided by colleagues, supervisor and manager, together with support from Metro’s training team.
The programme was designed and developed as a BIFA initiative in 2018, with Metro’s Training & Career Development Manager part of the project team.
The course is totally focused on all operational aspects of the freight forwarder, from an awareness of the modes of transport, to importing and exporting shipments and ensuring the safe passage of freight across international borders.
As an apprentice you will learn a wide range of tasks and responsibilities which includes working with carriers as well as transport planning, customs procedures, finance and freight costing.
