TRAINING | Personal and professional development

The Metro training team is responsible for internal skills and professional development and external training of customers, partners and suppliers.

The team’s remit encompasses induction and product training, mandatory and safety training, technical skills and soft skills, not typically taught in the classroom, such as the ability to work with a wide variety of people, time management and the ability to prioritise.

Undergraduate programme

Metro’s placement year programme provides undergraduates with the opportunity to work in a dynamic and demanding logistics environment. The undergraduates will develop their people skills and gain practical knowledge of the supply chain and automotive logistics. They undertake a wide range of tasks and responsibilities which includes working with carriers as well as transport planning and supply chain optimisation.

The Metro Apprenticeship

As a Metro apprentice, you will earn as you learn over 18 months, combining practical on-the-job training, with study towards Level 3 International Freight Forwarding Specialist. You will gain CORE knowledge and skills, before selecting a PATHWAY of Air Freight, Ocean Freight or Road Freight, to acquire additional knowledge and skills.

Customs and Trade Compliance Manager

The Role

  • Reporting to the Head of Operations & Brokerage, the key objective of the role is to support the business to ensure that the Metro Group meets its ever-expanding customs and trade compliance obligations.
  • This will be achieved through a continuous program of auditing to provide and identify gaps, weaknesses and risk to enable the minimisation of these through training, guidance and support.
  • The individual will be expected to develop and gain alignment with all internal teams on strategic opportunities and any corresponding initiatives within the area of customs compliance.
  • A sound knowledge of the company’s freight forwarding and brokerage business is essential.
  • The individual should have an entrepreneurial spirit with innovative thinking towards new business opportunities.
  • They must be knowledgeable of customs requirements, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to influence others.

What we are looking for

  • Minimum 5 years trade and customs compliance experience within a similar role, with responsibility for both imports and exports essential.
  • Preferably degree level education in International Business, Logistics or Operational Management (or equivalent additional experience to compensate).
  • Extensive experience in International Trade and Customs or Customs consulting.
  • Cargowise experience highly beneficial.
Brokerage Supervisor

The Role

  • Monitor operational requirement for the Brokerage team.
  • Determine workload and dissipate correctly within the department to provide an agile response for clients.
  • Manage operations clearance requests in order to meet clients expectations and SLAs.
  • Determine and process time sensitive clearances (import and export).
  • Manage through exception reporting work volumes.
  • Develop and build relationships to ensure a high level of customer service.
  • Ensure effective and efficient communication with haulier and EU based transport operations.
  • Prior to the release/delivery of cargo
    • Ensure accurate and correct documentation in place and sense checked.
    • Secure the payment of cleared funds for:
      • COD accounts.
      • Duty/Vat invoices.
  • Manage TAD creation process.
  • Monitor internal monitoring exception reports.
  • Ensure that the sales department are aware of client activity and business profitability.
  • Ensure that the departmental manager is aware of the status of all shipments.

What we are looking for

  • A clear understanding of import and export customs clearance procedures.
  • Provide operational support and technical knowledge to an operational brokerage team.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance in relation to Customs clearances Understand when duty is applicable or should be reduced and the documents required to obtain the reduction. The ability to complete CFSP/Home Use/IP/OP entries.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with clients and when necessary challenge same to determine accurate and clear shipment details.
  • The skill to prioritise entry requests and determine the correct workflow within the department.
  • Cargowise experience highly beneficial.
Transport Planner

The Role

Transport Planning

  • Haulage allocation and day to day management as required.
  • Focal Point, both with internal and external customers.
  • Complete all requirements and or offer alternative options to complete.

Transport service level & Cost Constraints

  • Ensure all Haulage requirements are met by approved suppliers.
  • Adapt and consider alternative requirements as required.
  • Balance Cost and Service requirements at all times.

Haulage Product

  • Key Accounts, sustain and develop key flow requirements and provide support to the Multimodal transport manager.
  • Supplier KPI monitoring, complete and assist management.
  • Develop relationships with all suppliers and focal points at Shipping Lines.
  • Transport system development and assistance enhancing house systems to support.

What we are looking for

  • Experience of UK Haulage operation, FCL / LCL and warehousing operations.
  • Experience of Intermodal and multiple ports operations.
  • Good geographic and container inventory knowledge.
Airfreight Export Coordinator (LHR)

The Role

  • Develop and build relationships to ensure a high level of customer service is provided to clients.
  • Strong working relationships with peers, mgmt., suppliers, airlines & overseas partners/agents.
  • Create and maintain customer standard operating procedures.
  • Strong commercial background – Both Supplier and Customer.
  • Clear Financial understanding of each job file(s).
  • Accurate & timely reporting to department manager.
  • Take ownership and accountability to deliver operational excellence.
  • Ensure that a ‘customer is king’ ethos is applied at all times.

What we are looking for

  • Evidenced Operational experience spanning at least 5 years with a hands on approach.
  • Stable work history.
  • Extensive customs knowledge essential.
  • Able to work collaboratively and independently where required.
  • ‘Can do’ attitude.
  • Cargowise experience highly beneficial.
Ocean Import Operator

The Role

  • Develop and build relationships to ensure a high level of customer service is provided to clients.
  • Communicate (using email, telephone and internet systems) with overseas agents and clients clearly, precisely and accurately and resolve issues and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Ensure pre-alert documents are on hand prior to vessel arrival.
  • Prior to the release/delivery of cargo
    • Collect all correct documentation.
    • Secure the payment of cleared funds for:
      • COD accounts.
      • Duty/Vat invoices.
  • Process supplier invoices.
  • Maintain customer and supplier spreadsheets.
  • Ensure that the departmental manager is aware of the status of all shipments

What we are looking for

  • Previous forwarding experience
  • A clear understanding of how duty/VAT is calculated.
  • Understands when duty is applicable or should be reduced and the documents required to obtain the reduction.
  • The ability to complete CFSP/Home Use/IP/OP entries.
  • The capacity to work in a high pressure environment whilst remaining calm when under pressure.
  • The ability to instruct a global network of agents, suppliers, shipping lines, hauliers.
  • The skill to prioritise a large number of tasks to ensure accuracy, and deliver results with great attention to detail and a high sense of urgency.
  • A positive attitude and good problem solving skills and to apply lessons learned.
Logistics Apprentice

The Role

  • Using internal systems to create documentation that will enable the freight to be moved to customer specifications, on time with all the necessary customs and legal documentation, including:
    • Creating and updating freight bookings.
    • Raise customs documentation to ensure the freight can move from country to country.
    • Collate all documents and distribute them to customers and carriers, as required.
    • Preparing and processing of invoices.
  • Deal with customer requests and queries by telephone and email quickly and efficiently by passing them on to the appropriate colleagues in the department.
  • Contacting customers directly to advise them of planned shipment details.
  • Communicate with departmental colleagues and other Metro staff, ensuring that the messages are clear precise and effective.
  • Accurate & timely reporting to department manager.
  • Take ownership of your training and development so you can continuously improve and develop the skills required by junior freight forwarder.

What we are looking for

  • An interest in all areas of transportation and logistics, sea, road, rail and air.
  • Good verbal and written communication, to provide a professional image to customers and suppliers.
  • Someone who can remain calm under pressure in a busy working environment.

  • Ideally GCSE Grade 5 in both Mathematics and English, but we will consider Grade 4’s for the right candidate.

What we offer

Ocean Export Operator

The Role

  • Develop and build relationships to ensure a high level of customer service is provided to clients.
  • Freight is moved to customer specifications, on time with all the necessary customs and legal documentation and a record is kept of all daily events and interactive reports.
  • Arrange haulage with shipping line/hauliers.
  • All freight is invoiced and checked prior to dispatch.
  • Ensure pre-alert documents are on hand as required.
  • Requests and queries are resolved and actioned quickly and efficiently.
  • Communication with overseas agents, customers and suppliers is clear precise and effective to ensure that the freight is moved as per customer requirements.
  • Use customer ERP and SAP systems as and when required.
  • Accurate & timely reporting/escalation to department manager.

What we are looking for

  • A minimum of 1 years’ experience in freight forwarding.
  • Export experience involving shipments to global destinations and working with clear operating procedures.
  • Good verbal and written communication, to provide a professional image to customers and suppliers.
  • The capacity to work in a high pressure environment whilst remaining calm when under pressure.
  • The ability to instruct a global network of agents, suppliers, shipping lines, hauliers.
